“Berea Gives Back” to Freedom School
The summer of 2008 brought about a new outreach and collection program from Berea Children's Home and Family Services titled "Berea Gives Back". In a collection that ran from July 2 - August 1, the event aimed to help a group of children who not only demonstrated great financial need, but also great potential. The recipients were students enrolled in BCHFS Freedom Schools, a summer literacy and enrichment program.
Employees of BCHFS collected and donated a variety of school supplies to reach a goal of equipping each child with a full backpack of new supplies for the new school year. Without such help, many of these families would not have the financial resources necessary to prepare students for school. Jill Tayfel, Assistant Director of Community Services, from whom the idea originated, hoped that the event would give students the tools to grow enthusiastic about education. Collection boxes were placed at throughout the agency and staff was regularly encouraged to participate.
Over 106 boxes of crayons, markers, and colored pencils were donated. These writing utensils were paired with over 70 packs of pens and pencils that will be put to use in the 447 donated notebooks. Additionally, uniforms were collected as were gift cards to Wal-Mart to purchase additional uniforms. Many other useful supplies such as rulers, erasers, scissors and glue will also go to students at Freedom School.
The success of "Berea Gives Back" can be attributed to the handwork and contributions of the staff at BCHFS. In an attempt to continue to minimize the financial stressors that accompany the start of a school year, BCHFS is committed to providing hope, support and assistance to children and families throughout the community.
