Paula D. Fultz, MSEd, PCC-S, Assistant Director of Counseling, on Family Ties After Divorce: Long-Term Implications for Children
Many children who receive counseling are dealing with the difficult emotional and physical changes that parental separation, divorce, or newly blended families bring to children. I strongly believe that when divorcing parents provide consistency in their relationships and environment they help their children feel safe and secure within their family during these challenging times. This is a key to a child’s positive adjustment and well-being when his world is turned upside down. Maintaining strong, positive relationships with both parents helps children develop resiliency for healthy growth and development. When parents are able to develop cordial, cooperative relationships with each other this process is facilitated. This article highlights how important early intervention and healthy parenting practices during stressful family changes impacts a child and his or her family relationships for generations to come.
