Susan M. Hyland, M.Ed., LSW, Assistant Vice President, Early Childhood and Family Support Programs, on why Foster Parents Play an Important Role in Education
Foster parents play an important role in the education of foster children. The estimated 1,448 children in foster care within Cuyahoga County face many challenges in life. Education is a key factor in determining if a foster child is able to make a successful transition from the welfare system into adulthood.
There is an achievement gap between foster children and their peers. This gap represents missed opportunity and untapped potential. Foster parents can make a difference in the education of the child in their care. They can be powerful advocates, using their expertise on a foster child to inform teachers and school personnel. Foster parents can set the stage for a child's success by being proactive. Early communication with the school and teachers provide a foundation for future positive interactions, even in difficult situations.
Berea Children's Home and Family Services supports foster families in our network with referrals to mental health services, training to help ensure the unique needs of foster children are met and information on other local resources to aid in successful school experiences for children.
