Pre-doctoral Psychology Internship

Dear Internship Applicant,

Welcome to information about the Pre-Doctoral Internship in Professional Psychology at Berea Children’s Home and Family Services. Our program is designed to facilitate the professional growth of pre-doctoral interns who are in the process of becoming practicing psychologists. Founded in 1864, Berea Children’s Home and Family Services (BCHFS) has a long tradition of improving the lives and opportunities of children, families, and adults by providing an integrated system of effective behavioral health and family support services.

The goals of the internship year include assisting the intern to become more skilled in the breadth and techniques of assessment and intervention with children, adolescents, and families. The educational and training model of the BCHFS Internship Program grows out of the Local Clinical-Scientist Model. Consistent with this model of training, the scientific approach is applied to all clinical practice endeavors through a process of learning, doing, and reflecting. Interns are exposed to research-based empirical and theoretical knowledge in the field; they are given a wide variety of experiences in service delivery; and they are asked to engage in ongoing analysis, reflection, and dialogue on the nature of this experience.

The Internship Program’s model of training is experiential, based on the belief that professional competency is developed through hands-on direct service contact with clients and subsequent in-depth analysis of that contact. We offer a diverse range of training opportunities including school based mental health, outpatient counseling, early childhood mental health, group counseling, and psychological assessment. We also offer opportunities to engage in scholarly inquiry and clinical training. We are a member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC). Our APPIC member number is 2054. Our National Match Services Program Code Number is 205411. We abide by all APPIC policies and procedures. For more APPIC information, please visit their web site at www.appic.org. We had our initial American Psychological Association site visit in June. We should know in November the results of the site visit. However, we cannot guarantee accreditation.

For the 2010-2011 training year we will be accepting applications for four internship positions. We offer a stipend of $20000 with subsidized child care and medical benefits available.

The application deadline is December 1, 2009. The start date is September 1, 2010. The internship training program utilizes the online APPIC Application for Psychology Internship (AAPI). This document is designed to be accessed and completed online. The AAPI is available on the APPIC web site www.appic.org. In addition to the online APPI, we ask for three letters of recommendation and a sample psychological report.
